Parking lot marking in Laval: your questions

Dimensions, lines and accessible spaces: what Laval’s regulations require.

What are the minimum dimensions of a parking space in Laval?

According to Laval’s Urban Planning Code (art. 498), a parking space must be at least 2.4 m wide. The minimum length is 5.0 m for a space perpendicular to the aisle (66° to 90°, the most common layout), 5.5 m for an angled space (16° to 65°) and 6.4 m for a parallel space. For a parking area of 6 spaces or more, the aisle must be at least 6 m wide for two-way traffic when spaces are at 90° (art. 507). Before repainting, we confirm the dimensions against your site plan.

Do parking spaces have to be marked with lines in Laval?

Yes. For an outdoor parking area, spaces must be delimited on the ground by permanent line painting, or by a change in material or surface texture (art. 495). The surface may be asphalt, concrete, concrete pavers or reinforced turf (art. 493).

How many accessible parking spaces are required in Laval, and how must they be marked?

When a building must have a barrier-free entrance under the Quebec Construction Code, the minimum is 1 space for 10 spaces or fewer, 2 for 11 to 24, 3 for 25 to 49, 4 for 50 to 99, and 5 for 100 spaces, plus 1 for each additional 100 (art. 499). Each space must be marked on the ground with the white international accessibility symbol, at least 1 m in size, in the center of the space, and identified by a sign (art. 504). The 2020 Quebec Construction Code has been in force since April 2025: confirm the details of your project with your professional.

Does repainting my lines in Laval trigger new site requirements?

Not for routine maintenance. When a parking area of 20 spaces or more is redeveloped, the City requires bicycle parking, but that requirement excludes maintenance work such as resurfacing, crack sealing or paint application (art. 475). If you change the layout (number or arrangement of spaces), check with the City first (311, or 450 978-8000 from outside Laval).
